Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Tasmania?
Rolling out now. GP training began on 29 May 2026 and the first GPs authorised to diagnose and start treatment were expected from around mid 2026.
A psychiatrist assessment by video is the reliable route for now. Video assessment matters more in Tasmania than almost anywhere: it removes the flight to the mainland from the exercise.
In November 2025 the Tasmanian Government said GPs would be able to diagnose and treat ADHD from 2026, and the first training workshop ran in Devonport on 29 May 2026 with about 50 GPs enrolled. Trained GPs can now apply to the Department of Health Pharmaceutical Services Branch for authorisation to assess, diagnose and initiate Schedule 8 prescribing, with the first authorised GPs expected from around mid 2026. Authorised numbers are still small, so the psychiatrist by video route remains the practical answer for most people today.

The psychiatrist route, and why video changed it
A GP referral to a psychiatrist remains the standard route wherever the GP path is closed, and video assessment attracts the same Medicare rebate as in person: $467.45 on item 92435, claimable once every 12 months. Video means the psychiatrist does not have to be in your state at all.
The number that matters is not the clinic's headline fee but your gap after the rebate, and it swings by more than a thousand dollars between clinics billing the same item. Ask for the gap in writing before you book, ask the wait for the medication appointment rather than the first call, and check the assessing practitioner on the Ahpra register, all covered in the assessment section of our resources page.
